What is CE-Battery qualification?

CE-Battery qualification is a conformity assessment procedure that battery products must pass to enter the EU market and is part of the new EU battery regulation EU 2023/1542.  CE-Battery certification requires battery products to meet specific safety, environmental and performance standards to ensure their legal circulation in the EU market.

CE-Battery controls apply to all types of batteries, including but not limited to:

From December 8, pure electricity products without CE-Battery qualification will be removed from the shelves.

From December 17, products containing batteries without CE-Battery qualification will also be removed from the shelves.

CE-Battery Restriction of hazardous substances

The mercury, cadmium, and lead content in batteries must meet the following strict limits:

Mercury (Hg) : ≤0.0005%;

Cadmium (Cd) : ≤0.002% (portable battery);

Lead (Pb) : ≤0.01% (portable batteries), but portable zinc-air button batteries can be delayed until August 18, 2028.

Label and information requirements

All batteries must be labeled with detailed information, including manufacturer information, battery type, chemical composition, etc.  At the same time, the battery should also be accompanied by a QR code to facilitate consumers and market supervision agencies to query battery information.

CE-Battery certification process

To obtain CE-Battery certification, merchants need to follow the following procedures:

1, fill in the application form: provide product related information.

2, provide samples: according to the requirements to submit battery samples for testing institutions.

3, sample testing: testing institutions in accordance with EU 2023/1542 regulations on battery samples for harmful substances content test.

4, audit and report: After passing the test, the business needs to review the content of the report and upload it to the relevant platform for review.
